sigma kappa strict?
by: 2015 PNMHey Everyone! I signed up to rush in the fall. I have been reading through some of the rankings and I noticed that Sigma Kappa was called out for having strict rules like always having to straighten your hair if wearing their stuff? Is this how all sororities are or does it depend on the chapter?

^Well, this person got one thing right: don't believe anything you read on here about anyone. That being said, my sisters have never made me feel inadequate or like I have to pretend to be something I'm not. They encourage me to be the best version of myself each and every day. I'm proud to wear my letters and feel so lucky to be surrounded by these women. PNMs: find a home where YOU feel confident, loved and supported- not what some anonymous, bitter poster on here tells you.

I'd just like to point out that while Sigma Kappa is definitely next-level crazy about this, every house has some sort of rules about appearance and behavior while in letters. Most houses ask members to look polished while wearing letters, to limit their foul-mouthed cursing, and to never, ever drink in public while wearing letters. The theory is you are representing your organization and the way you look/act will form how future PNMs, boys, and even just the country as a whole view your sorority. But requiring you straighten your hair, and calling you out for it if you don't? That's over the line, and unsiserly. At my house, so long as you don't disgrace your letters by looking like a total slob and wearing your slippers and PJ pants to class with a bid day shirt, you're fine. But I do know sometimes I've gone to throw on a lettered shirt and been like "you know what? I don't want to represent my house today. I may go to happy hour after class." And then I just pick a fraternity shirt. ;)

Okay I'm not trying to put down sigma kappa, but let's be real here. They do not have any rules like this. Top tier sororities don't even have rules like this (I would know, I'm in one.) I don't really know the point of spreading rumors like this but don't be scared PNMs, it's all false. Sigma kappa is just like any other chapter here, they want members to look there best but that's about it

I have numerous friends in SK including one that I'm pretty close with. They don't require you to straighten your hair - Close Friend almost always curled hers - although they do expect you to look polished when wearing letters, at football games, at chapter etc. But that's just about respect for the sisterhood and for yourself, if anything. I was actually nervous about the football games thing because I'm rushing this fall, but one SK friend showed me a pic of her SK sister in orange-and-blue striped overalls, goofy and cute and fun! So they'll let you bend the rules for that if you have a really cute idea - they just don't want t-shirts and cutoff shorts because those don't fit their "image" (but most houses ban that, anyway). They have this southern classy aesthetic vibe, and most girls who pledge love that vibe to begin with, so it's no big deal. Close Friend is obsessed with all things monogrammed and she loves Lilly and other "preppy" prints and colors. She was like that before bid day, and did have at least one or two other houses at the end of Round 3 or so - but dropped them herself because she disliked them. She went with SK because she legit liked it, NOT because it was just her "only option."
As for the bullying - yes, it's a known problem, but MOST SISTERS AREN'T INVOLVED WITH IT and for the most part the issue has died down. It was mostly during a really stressful point in spring semester and isn't their normal MO.

If you aren't okay with doing hair and makeup and dressing nicely, sorority life at UF is probably not for you. My chapter is considered 'middle tier' and we have rules about how you're supposed to look when you're wearing letters. Hair, makeup, everything. I doubt any chapters rules are much different than anyone else's. And if you can't handle these rules, you're going to lose it when you see your chapters recruitment dress code. Mine is 100% mandatory spanx for everyone, two different outfit checks, hair, makeup only in certain colors, spray tans, nails only in certain colors, and specific shoes. This is how it is in SEC sororities. If it's not for you, that's cool, but it is what it is. You do you.
(And for the record, I've never noticed anything about sigma kappas appearances that was any different than like alpha chi or phi mu or whoever.)

A lot of girls in this year pledge class only had one preference party and it was at Sigma Kappa. I'm talking like tons and tons of girls. Most people join because in the end, this is their only choice left on their list. They're just happy to have a bid somewhere
