any advice?

by:

I was super excited to go through recruitment and hopefully be able to join a sorority I love but after researching around I found out that it's A LOT of money that I am not sure if I (and my parents) really want to spend. Is it worth it for a girl who does not have money to blow? I was wondering if anyone has any advice? I know most girls and their parents are wealthy enough to join with ease but there has to be some girls who are struggling but still wish to join. Does anyone have any personal experience or any advice about this situation? Besides the obvious, "if you can't afford it, don't join". Thanks guys!

I was in the same situation when I went through rush my freshman year. I'm a junior now and it has all worked out. First of all there are girls from all socio-economic backgrounds in every house. Don't think we are all rich cause that is not the case. Many girls in my house have jobs, have scholarships, or use financial aid to pay the expenses of college.
But here is something to research. If you are living on campus, the UF meal plan will run you at a minimum $1,500 per semester. If you are in a sorority you can use this money to pay your dues as you will eat at your house. Dues at my house run about $1,900 a semester. $400 or less depending on the UF meal plan you select. When you think of it this way it doesn't seem so out of reach. BTW, if you have already purchased a meal plan they will let you transfer it to your sorority. So you won't be out any money. If you haven't don't buy one. You can get by for 2 weeks and you can always purchase a meal plan at anytime if things don't work out during rush. I'm so glad I didn't let the fear of the unknown financial responsibility keep me from rushing. I love my sisterhood!! Good luck to you. Hope this helps with your decision. Go Gators! Go Greek!

I can only speak for my chapter but I know that we have girls whose parents pay for everything, girls who work 2-3 jobs to pay for dues, and everything in between. No one is going to judge you for how you and your family take care of dues. That being said, if you get a job you can make it work!

There are plenty of girls who work to pay their dues! Many chapters also offer payment plans or other ways to help you pay your dues. If this is something you want, and you're willing to put in effort to get it, then go for it!
