clarity to confusion

by: UF Alumnus - Dad

I developed this discussion because my daughter Rushed, and she enjoyed the process and result. Frankly I’m fascinated about how these things work because even though I graduated from UF I knew nothing about Greek life.

There is no objective ranking. The ranking on Greek Rank is somewhat objective but individuals skew the rankings by making an all 5 Star or all 1 Star assessment. (#1 Phi Mu, #2 Sigma Kappa, #3 Alpha Delta Pi). What I assume are UF student ranking on the discussion boards is based on the looks of the girls in the Sororities. A Typical Top Tier Ranking (ZTA, ADPI , KD & DDD). If you are a hottie and proportioned just right and you want to be recognized as such, then trying to obtain a ‘Top Tier’ can make a bunch of sense. However, this is fleeting. Once you go National what different sororities have as priorities when selecting their members changes. To each their own on what they prioritize.

Different discussions have a parent getting really pissed because their daughter got cut from a ‘Top Tiers’. So, wouldn’t a PNM have to want to be in a ‘Top Tier’ for a parent to be upset about not being in a ‘Top Tier’? Then when they didn’t get in they then turn and criticize the sororities? One can make the argument the sorority is being shallow by only allowing hotties in their sorority, but if that is true, then that parent is also shallow.

Now if you are a self-confident PNM it really shouldn’t matter what sorority you end up choosing or which one chose you. I can understand If your somewhat unfortunate looking you may not want to be surrounded by hotties 24/7 and visa versa, but if you are truly confident person you would see the benefits and embrace the difference you would probably have a superior experience then your fellow PNM.

Would it make sense for ‘Top Tiers’ to allow the self-confident PNM in that does not meet their hottie standard? I think so, but that is their choice. The lower tiers have some hotties, so they benefit from having diversity while the top tier benefit from being homogeneous.

Honestly in the end it does not matter what the 'tier' rating is of the sorority because in a few years you’re not in that sorority anymore. If you want to go extreme and you’re just looking to be a Stepford Wife that can be done at any house, and if you are looking for connections for the business world a local sorority ‘tier’ might be important but the member size of national sorority is probably more important.

Most importantly I’m glad to discover the Greek Houses and sizes are increasing. To me the only ones I see with any beef are the ones that stuck out the process and didn’t get a house they can be a part of and apparently that is being addressed.
