rush question?

by: rush

I am just curious, around what round does the sorority pretty much know they want you? Also, how do you know when someone drops you?

I can only speak on behalf of my house, for us it's something like this:

If you are invited back for 2nd round, it basically just means you gave us a good first impression and we want to see more of you.
If you are invited to the 3rd round, it means we think you would might truly be a fit and want more time with you to get to know a little bit more about you besides the basics of where you're from, if you like your roommate, etc.
And if you get invited to pref, we ~basically~ are ready to invite you into our sisterhood. This might be different for other chapters, but we don't invite anyone to pref who we wouldn't be willing to give a bid to. Now, BEING INVITED TO PREF DOES NOT GUARANTEE A BID. If you come to pref and say something rude or tell us you don't want our house, you will probably be placed lower on the bid list. But pref is the serious round where it isn't just small talk and surface level conversation anymore, an invitation to pref means we are seriously considering you for the chapter and we want to know if you are seriously considering us too.

This is how you'll know if you were dropped:
After each round, you are going to decide the sororities you want to go to back to. The rank of those sororities does not matter. The rank of the ones you do not want to go back to matters though. At the beginning of each round, your pi chi will give you your schedule. All of the houses on your schedule invited you back for the upcoming round. Ideally (but this almost NEVER happens), you get back the maximum houses possible for the round and they are the ones that you wanted back. However, realistically, you will be dropped by one or more of them. This is why the rank for your bottom houses matters. Say that Theta was on your list of houses you wanted to go back to, but they dropped you. Now there's one spot open on your schedule. And say that XO was on the list of houses you didn't want to go back to, but they wanted to invite you back, they will bump up to Theta's spot (this is why the rank of houses you don't want to go to matters - your #1 should be one that was just okay, because you will likely be going back). If Theta is not on your schedule, that's how you know they dropped you.

To summarize: If you put a house on your list of ones you would like to return to and they aren't on your schedule for the next round, they dropped you. The only way you will never NOT know if a chapter dropped you is if you get a full schedule back the next day of every single house that you put down as wanting to go back to. Because all your top houses asked you back, there is not room for the houses you didn't want on your schedule. Again, do not count on this scenario - you will more than likely be invited back to a house you didn't put on your top list!

So when they say it's a "mutual" selection, it's really not. The houses do the choosing.

Also, I know this sounds like a lot but trust me, once you get to rush it will all make sense and you'll understand, I promise

Some houses know names of PNMs now that they want. These are people that members know personally and they have been discussed within the chapter but the real decisions do not come until Rush. PNMs are ranked after each round (houses are different in the way this is done and it’s kept secret) Panhellenic tells each chapter how many they can invite back. It’s called RFM and the invites back are low for the top tiers and highest among the lower tiers. Some chapters have to invite all legacies back to round 2 so it can get tough for the top tiers after round 1 if they have a lot of legacies. This system continues into round 3 and if a chapter invites you back to pref then they can see you in that house and they want you.

kind of a confusing and complex question but is there a minimum or maximum number of houses that can ask you back? for instance say there is a super hot amazing girl can every house invite her back? and vice vera say there is a weird unlikeable girl can no houses invite her back? And if you are just an average girl what is the difference between getting 9 houses inviting you back or 12 or 13 and do chapters discuss among each other who they are inviting back so there is no one left not being invited back? and are houses told to be very lenient on first round cuts therefore lots go girls are invited back. and also do sororities communicate with each other during rush?

No, sororities are not all talking to each other during rush and are not in cahoots about who is going back where! They focus solely on their own chapters. Cuts after the first round are different for every house. Like the second comment says, most houses will invite you to round 2 as long as you held a conversation, seemed interested and fun, and dressed nicely. MOST houses, not all. Zeta and adpi and just the top tier in general get to be more choosey because they know they'll basically get any pnms they want back for the next round.

To answer the first part, yes a girl can be dropped by every single house during any round. It's rare but it can happen; sometimes great girls get overlooked and fall through the cracks, but most of the time that I've seen this happen it's been to girls who were having a negative experience with rush. It just wasn't for them, they weren't happy to be there, and it showed. So it isn't something I would stress too much about. And yes, the same goes the other way; if a pnm is extremely desirable then she will technically have her pick of the houses because all of them will invite her back so she will only go back to the ones she wants to. This is the only scenario where it truly is mutual selection, and it's VERY rare.

And yes, it is very likely that after round 1 you could go to 9 houses while your friend goes to 12. Lots of girls do not get the maximum amount of houses possible back for each round. Don't freak out if it happens, it's totally normal. There was a girl in my pi chi group who only had 3 houses invite her back after round 1, but they all kept her all the way through pref and she got her first choice and loves it.

Don’t get fixated on how many invites you get back as it will drive you crazy. Don’t be part of PNM talk in your dorm etc that talks about how many everyone got. It could drive you nuts. Just go in with a positive attitude and enjoy rush.
