alleged hazing? aphi-gphi-wopo?

by: Curious

I'm just curious why aphi is in trouble but gphi is not when they had the exact same thing happen with the wopo boys? Anyone know?

It's important to note that the trust walk is an activity that has been part of the bid day ceremony since the beginning of time. It also needs to be said that all new members were given the option of not taking part in the trust walk if they felt at all uncomfortable. As for the "striptease" by WOPO, the players "stripped" down to their Speedos----the same thing they wear on a daily basis to practice and matches. WOPO does this at all of the houses without any complaint. It appears as though one new member may not be a good match for sorority life in which case she should leave and let the girls continue with the activities that are inherent to Greek life.

Why aren't gphi and dg in trouble too that seems pretty unfair.

TOTALLY unfair----it's all about the girl(s) who lodged the complaint. If there were no complaints out of gphi and dg then they don't have a problem. The chapter's bylaws are clear---allegations are taken seriously even if they're baseless---and investigations are mandatory. This will all be cleared up soon----in the meantime, Alpha Phi refuses to bring allegations against other houses that engage in the same behaviors---instead, they hold their head high and wait for the process to play-out.

What exactly is the trust walk?

The trust walk is actually a beautiful ceremony---at least the way Alpha Phi does it. It's also a staple of sorority life. The new members are asked to close their eyes----they are not blindfolded. They are told that if they feel the least bit uncomfortable, they can keep their eyes open. Then they are led----carefully---to another room---in this case, it was outdoors to a patio. When they open their eyes they see that they are encircled by the active members. The older sisters sing a song to the new pledges---it's actually pretty moving. There was an adult present at the Alpha Phi trust walk. It was done very respectfully---no one was forced to take part---no one was injured---no one even stumbled. Everyone loved it. Yet THIS is where the hazing allegation stems from.

Good to know! I know someone who is a new member and she is very excited and happy to be an Alpha Phi! She has no complaints at all! 

But here's the downside: according to the letter of the chapter/university law, anytime new members are asked to do something that the actives are not asked to do, that constitutes "hazing." It's absurd in this case, since the new members were simply asked (given the option) to briefly close their eyes for the trust walk. Still, if the university decides to stick by the letter of the law, APhi may end up with some sanctions. If this happens, there will undoubtedly be a ripple effect throughout the entire Greek system and A LOT will change. So, way to go whiner....

Whatever did or didn't happen, aphi wasn't punished, so let's move on
