other costs besides dues?..

by:

hiii i am an incoming freshman looking to go through recruitment in the fall. i saw the recruitment handbook so i know the estimated dues, but from experience can anyone share what else theyve spent money on? like clothes for recruitment and bid day stuff like an estimate on additional costs? im paying for all of this on my own and i would like to get an idea of how much money to put aside. thanks!

Be sure to set aside $8000-9000 at least for plastic surgery. All top sororities get nose jobs, breast implants, lip injections etc. depending where you decide it may be required!

Hi! So every house will have different dues and that covers certain things for each sorority. I would say the most expensive thing is recruitment outfits, big/little, and if you purchase shirts for philos. Recruitment can depending on what clothes u already have cost between $300-500 for outfits/shoes, and big/little $130-150. Plus whatever dues ur house has. Being in a sorority is a big investment so just be prepared and good luck during recruitment.

^ this is accurate! other than what was stated above, everything else is pretty much covered in dues. its really just recruitment fits, big/little, and buying philo shirts... recruitment fits u can def find cute fits for cheap though. let me add that also the recruitment booklet is sometimes off. panhellenic does a estimate on dues in that booklet. its fairly correct, but last year my sororities dues were +$300 more a semester in the booklet, where as my friends sorority was -~200 less a semester in the booklet. so its good to also have some extra cash set aside for something like that if need be! good luck in recruitment!!

Outside of dues in my 4 years I spent around $5000 on stuff for my sorority. Probably $6000 if you include stuff for date parties

Yeah this sounds about right. Around $1500 a year. Sororities are expensive y’all. That is why you see sooo many girls dropping their Junior and Senior year, they just run out of money.

Definitely as said above it’s kind of expensive but It really just depends. This will be my thinned year and I think I spent around $1000-$1,500 per semester with dues and all the fun stuff that comes with being in a sorority. I know a lot of sororities do payment plans so if one payment is not feasibly possible there may be other options. I would say a good estimate for philo shirts is between $15-$25 dollars. But just remember to do what’s best for you, if you need to skip out on buying a philo shirt so you can eat/live so be it.

I thought it would be more affordable. Dues first semester were easily over 1 to 1.5k. There are fees for being late, missing events, etc. You need to buy clothes, which costs a lot. Going out for meals costs a LOT and adds up fast. (meals as in going out for dinner with your sisters). You need the nicest shoes, room decor, hair, eyelashes etc. Lots of spending on materials and things that really don't matter. Not as much plastic surgery as you think. Never met a sorority girl that was forced into it. However it does happen. Most of the spending goes to meals, clothing/fashion, hair, you know all that stuff. I wasn't expecting it and being in a sorority got expensive fast so that's why I actually dropped (mostly why). Unfortunately if you aren't wealthy or at least upper middle class you will have a hard time fitting in, whether it be affording dues, buying the same clothes, going on outtings with everyone, having a car, etc.
So, it depends. Dues are expensive obviously, but expect to spend the same amount, if not more, on other crap. If you don't have money to spare it will be difficult, not only financially and physically but socially and mentally.

there are certain things outside of dues that you have to buy or feel the need to buy. for example, for recruitment there are outfit themes that change every year and are required. so you cant get out of buying those. they are fairly strict outfits so you all look uniformed. for date parties there are themes and not everyone has a safari fit or a cowgirl fit in their closet. philo shirts are typicall $15-$25 and many participants love copping those... its expensive straight up. you can get around it by buying cheaper outfits, not buying philo shirts... regardless its still expensive. its not just dues for the sorority/philanthropy, there is an undeniable fun aspect that is just as costly

great info on this post. should be made aware that this is pretty much the same for every sorority top, mid or bottom. a top house DZ costs less than bottom house sig kap or alpha gam, so the rankings dont really matter with how costly it is. its costly all around. regardless the fun aspect does cost a hefty amount of money in top, mid and/or bottom if you're looking to get the most out of your sorority outside philo events and bettering your sorority which are top priorities hopefully lol
