sorority recruitment

by:

I will be attending asu next year as a junior and am 22 years old. I wanted to rush that my first year at asu, but am afraid my age will be an issue with getting accepted into houses. Any opinions or thoughts from anyone?

I went through recruitment this year, and let me just say, all of the sororities are determined to help every girl find her perfect house (and in some cases, decide sorority life isn't for them). There are 12 amazing sororities to choose from, many of which pride themselves on being diverse, so your age shouldn't be a problem with them. There are always a few girls who join later in their college years so you're not alone. My personal experience of what each of the sororities look for after going through rush are as follows:

Alpha Chi Omega: Accomplishments and friendliness. They're looking for girls to bring a friendlier image to their sorority, but also want accomplished girls to help bump them back up to a top house (they're upper middle right now, but used to be top)

Alpha Delta Pi: Will take anyone who fits in with them. Doesn't care about labels or who the top houses are, but also not a top house.

Alpha Gamma Delta: Diversity. Prides themselves on being the most diverse sorority on campus.

Alpha Phi: Looks, unfortunately. There is a ton of variation in the personalities of Alpha Phis, and the only thing the girls seem to have in common is that they're all really pretty. I had a girl tell me during recruitment that I looked like an Alpha Phi... Same thing happened in Theta.

Chi Omega: Accomplishments. These girls all seem to be athletic or at least competitive. They win a lot of events and look for girls that help them win. Don't care much about popularity (con't)

Delta Gamma: Friendliness and looks. Seems to take girls with big personalities, but only if they look good too. Really wants to be the top house.

Delta Zeta: Looks and intelligence. They collect girls with good grades. This was the only house that dropped me first round that I wanted, most likely due to my 3.1 GPA. Pretty girls, but kind of keep to themselves.

Gamma Phi Beta: Kind of desperate, will pretty much take any girl regardless of merit or accomplishments. They are very sweet though and act as kind of a haven for the girls that don't get to go anywhere else. I highly doubt this house is anyones first choice, the girls who end up here usually limited their options too much and got dropped from their favorite house at the last minute.

Kappa Kappa Gamma: Easy going girls. They don't seem to care about merit or intelligence or really anything actually. They're not aggressive recruiters during rush and it kind of seems like they just accept the girls who pref them and don't try hard. They're not very memorable but seem nice.

Pi Beta Phi: Sweet smart girls, looks are a bonus but there isn't enough sweet smart pretty girls to fill quota. Known as a top house, frats think they're pretty. I've heard rumors about them being stuck up, but that was never my experience. They drop girls who clearly just want to be a Pi Phi because it's a top house and stick with the girls who genuinely get along with everyone.

Sigma Kappa: They look for girls who don't act like "typical" sorority girls but want to bond and truly care about sisterhood. They're new so they don't drop anyone who wants to be there. They had a great first rush and bumped themselves up to mid tier range. New houses are never top houses, but I see SK going places.

Kappa Alpha Theta: Perfect girls. There are nice girls in Theta, but that seems to be the last priority. Theta are known for recruiting based on looks, and during rush they went around in a circle sharing all of their accomplishments. Not one girl was average. They're all either models or fashion interns in Milan or winning prizes for young film festivals. There's a bit of a stepford vibe to them actually. They're super selective and look for girls "worthy" of being a Theta. It helps a lot with jobs and stuff, but unfortunately many Theta's are crazy ambitious and full of themselves. Don't rule it out, but don't get your hopes up either.

What a terrible experience - basically six top houses that attract your typical traditional type sorority girls. Problem is there are close to two thousand girls trying to get in and most leave crushed with no good explanation or reason why they shouldn't be part of a great house. The other sororities have nice girls but they are not "A" typical. Some more hard partiers others religious or book worms. The process almost forces you into one of these unless you have the guts to tap out like I did. The rush process for a Freshman like me is a horrible way to begin the year I don't know why they don't wait until Spring like many schools so you can at least make some friends to console you before having your confidence ruined and excitement about college taken away. # I am out

I realize the process is not for everyone, but how weird is it to pull up a post from 2012 and comment on it? You also seem pretty angry. Believe it or not, all these things show up in your conversations. Sorority life is not for everyone. If you truly wanted friendships and sisterhood you would have stayed in and taken the house that chose you, where you belong.
