by:

Why did they close? Also before you roast me, no I don’t go to jmu, just a dg from another school and saw our nationals post that they closed their chapter

same here! sounds like they had a hard time with retention and eo pulled their charter but wondering if there was something else to make the chapter vote to close?

i believe it was due to low member retention. they couldn’t hit quota. haven’t heard of any other reasons

JMU Greek life prioritizes partying and JMUs frats didn’t think they were hot enough so they wouldn’t mix with them, and then when recruitment comes around pnms knew about it or heard from other girls and that’s where their recruiting problem came in. I honestly feel so bad for them because they really didn’t do anything wrong.

DG alum here- this is the truth! And then when frats would mix with us they would be like “wow you guys are cool and pretty so why do you have that rep?” But it never went away. The other orgs needed to keep someone down to keep themselves up.

I just came to see what happened. I just graduated from the Mississippi state and was a dg there (we are a huge, nationally ranked charter and we often send members to other charters to help with recruitment. Frats and frat boys suck honestly and are so toxic for sorority women and I hope that these girls at least found some great sisters during their time, which is all delta gam is about. ITB always sisters

It really is a shame that it would come down to this. JMU’s culture truly needs to change to never allow this to happen in the future. Everyone involved in Greek life needs to look at themselves in the mirror and really think about how they can better themselves. A lot of it has to do with this website. Greekrank is an outlet for bullying and needs to be removed from jmu Greek life culture permanently. A lot of you need a swift kick in the ass.

If you really think about it, not every member of greek life or potential new member will want to adjust to the DG “standards” of what greek life should be. The majority always rules and clearly a majority of girls did not want to be a part of DG. I’m sorry about the chapter closing but girls will choose who they fit in with and love. It’s just a part of the rush process.

It is really sad the chapter closed and I definitely agree that DG was bullied off but I also agree that DG prided itself on standing out and being different which is great but you can’t expect a lot of freshmen girls who are trying to find their place and “fit in” are going to want to join an org that does the opposite

As someone who went through recruitment and my entire group was shallow and concerned about looks and social life—girls aren’t looking for their “homes” they’re looking for girls to get drunk with and what frats they’ll get to mix with. DG was never on anyone’s radar because of looks, their social life, and the reputation the Greek life community gave them cause they’d take girls who didn’t look a certain way heaven forbid. Don’t try and twist it. Panhel didn’t do anything to stop the bullying too. It’s 2021 and this is still an issue which is sad considering the whole point of Greek life is to promote sisterhood and lift women up, but nope—the whole campus shunned them cause they don’t look a certain way.

That’s a big accusation to say no girls at jmu care about surrounding themselves with caring friends. Though I do agree there are girls that only care about superficial things, there are a lot of girls that do care about other things. There are chapters that do amazing things for their philanthropies, there’s a chapter that’s been the highest gpa for years and there are definitely chapters that have solid sisterhoods. Yes, there were girls who went into the DG house who were purposely rude during recruitment but there were also nice girls that attempted to carry conversations. Not gonna lie, DG needed work on conversational skills. I remember when phi sig came to campus their nationals had them learning conversational skills and practicing recruitment conversations through hired professionals. DG nationals should’ve been doing that for years. Yeah jmu is toxic but your nationals didn’t do anything to help your situation

It was a combination of things but let’s be honest—the reputation that was given to them, combined with two new sororities coming to campus, there was nothing to be done that could’ve helped when legit majority if not all the pnms didn’t wanna join DG or give them a chance. As the OG comment said—Greek life as a whole needs to really change their values and how they treat others.

dg was not founded before those 2 other sororities. They were founded in 1982 prior to at least half the sororities that have since joined campus and according to dg national’s insta comments, the reputation is nothing new so it’s really something that was placed on the chapter 10+ years ago from an era that thought bullying was acceptable and has remained because greek life is very slow to reform

Basically, JMU Greek culture is about partying and looks and the organizations you mix with. Because DG doesn’t choose girls due to looks or petty superficial things, the chapter was heavily diverse and JMU decided to bully them and of course those comments spread, and pnms rushing didn’t want to join a sorority called “donut grabbers” cause they wanna be with the pretty girls and party with the best frats. JMU Panhel knows about this and never ever once did anything to stop this treatment and it’s kinda hard to recruit people when they don’t even give you a chance so. There’s obviously more to it, but tbh this is the biggest issue and at the end of the day, if they don’t have a lot of people in the chapter to give the organization money, they aren’t worth it to them . It’s truly sad and i hope JMU Greek life changes or learns from this, but i can’t see that happening anytime soon.
