So let's clarify, from a member of a sorority that is considered selective in recruitment: Sororities hold MEMBERSHIP SELECTION. We are looking for our new sisters. This is the most important thing we do all year. No one in a sorority refers to membership selection as a cut session, and I'm pretty sure that any chapter advisor here who heard it called that would shut it down fast and the members would be talked to, I know ours would. We are focused on finding the pnm's that best fit with our chapter, not searching for pnm's to cut.  I promise that any discussions of pnm's are positive by far and centered on finding the good qualities in each, not about fault-finding or negative judgements.  There are always so many great pnm's. With over 1700 this year, does it make any sense to take an attitude of 'well who are we going to cut'? No! We don't have time for than approach or the negativity.  It's very much the opposite.  Panhellenic decides the number of pnm's each chapter can invite back.  This is calculated and readjusted throughout the week for each round. Chapters don't submit a cut list, we submit a ranked list of the pnm's, and the pnm's that are ranked above whatever our assigned cutoff number is are the ones who are invited back. The chapter members don't even know what our final submitted ranked list looks like, and don't know the number of pnm's that we are allowed back, only our recruitment committee sees it. So we aren't making cut decisions, just discussing, voting, ranking etc; every sorority has their own system.  When you are not invited back it stings, but please understand that it's not personal. You were not judged to be unworthy, there's nothing wrong with you, we liked you fine, but this is about numbers. If you feel that you really connected with some members, then you did, and they really wanted you back, so if you get released from that house, know that the actives you talked to are VERY upset also. That sting hits us too and emotions run strong when members' favorite girls don't come back. But we all have to smile and keep going and so do you. It's a numbers game, that's all. We do not ever see your ranks of the sororities at any round so our membership selection is not influenced by your ranks of us. The chapters' pnm ranks for Philanthropy will be completed before you come to campus based on grades, resume, video, social media, and opinions from any members who happen to know you. Our ranks will be submitted and the cutoff numbers will be calculated by panhellenic based on the final number of pnm's showing up to orientation. It's going to be okay, stay positive and keep an open mind. You got this!
