A Bama alumna of Alpha Kappa Alpha posted this to a popular national discussion board for African-American women called Lipstick Alley: When I was down at Alabama, we held a march and walked down Sorority Row (Magnolia and Colonial Drive). If I remember correctly, we were protesting the treatment of our Black Homecoming Queen, who had been crowned during halftime of our football game. A large section of white Greeks (male and female) turned their backs to her in the stands. The gesture was very obvious, it was very rude, and it was very stupid. The Machine was mad because black students (and many independent white students) banded together and voted for the young lady to be homecoming queen. When we marched, every single sorority house closed their shutters and curtains. The ONLY white sorority house that DID NOT DO THAT was KAPPA ALPHA THETA SORORITY. We were holding candles, and as we marched past their sorority house, many of their members came outside holding candles while dressed in long gowns. They stood there singing the same thing that we were singing.
