It's all in the reports if you know what you're looking for. The sororities with the highest return rates, meaning highest rankings among pnm's, are the ones who end up taking closest to quota or spot on it, and not much more than. They have a track record of desirability among pnm's, which means they can count on their top pnm's ranking them high and staying with them through the process all the way to bid day. Because of this track record, they are given the lowest numbers to invite back each round so their releases are heavy and their prefs are smallest while hitting quota with no problem. They take the least number of quota additions, if at all, so their new member numbers will be lowest. At the other end of the return rate scale are the houses that have a track record of being least highly ranked by pnm's and therefore cannot be as selective. Their numbers to invite back are higher from round to round and they will not release as many. They will be the ones ending up with higher numbers at pref and therefore will be assigned more quota additions and taking higher numbers in their new member classes than the more selective houses. This is where the true ranks come from. But this system is in place for the benefit of the pnm's. In the old days, sororities didn't have to make releases early on and pnm's could cut houses. Sororities would just keep inviting pnm's back that they knew they weren't going to bid but they liked having larger parties and looking desirable. So they just delayed making the inevitable decisions and the big cuts came from these popular sororities right before prefs. Many pnm's ended up being cut completely out of rush this way. They had no way of knowing that these popular houses were going to drop them in the end, or that the houses they had been dropping would actually have loved to have them and put them on their bid list. There weren't any quota additions either, so if you weren't high enough on a bid list to match you didn't get a bid after all that. So you see, it is better to know up front that you aren't in the running for a bid and focus on the houses where you are really wanted. It is so much better this way. With all that said, go where you are wanted and don't focus on the numbers game that is recruitment. Not getting invited back to a house does NOT mean that they hated you, or found you unworthy or undesirable, or that they wouldn't want to hang out with you, or be friends with you, or be your roommate. It is a numbers game.
