Patty PNM ranks her houses the traditional way going into philanthropy, most popular to least popular. Because she puts the least popular chapters at the bottom- a couple of them are not on her invite list because they get cut. Patty is cut from several chapters for grades and a couple because she is coming from far away and they prefer in state girls. Patty only gets 3 houses back for philanthropy. She struggles to get through the week and ends up dropping altogether. Now let’s say Patty does strategic ranking instead. She knows houses A and B are grades houses and she doesn’t make their cutoff. She knows houses K and L are mostly for instate girls and she doesn’t even have a letter of Rec for them. By putting these chapters at the bottom of her ranking, it bumps the other chapters up. Patty now gets 6 chapters back for Philanthropy round. She finds that she likes 2 of them, 2 she doesn’t feel are a fit and the other 2 are just okay but she grows to like them more by the end of the week. Patty makes it through to pref round and gets a bid to one of the houses she initially didn’t like but by the end of the week she falls in love and finds her home.
