Mary, I don’t know how long ago you went through recruitment but let’s be real. No matter how cute, smart, and well spoken a non-Southern girl is at parties, the odds are really against her in getting a bid from a traditional, Old Row houses. Those houses are filled with girls that are all from the same zip codes and know each other prior to recruitment. And, they don’t really want ti change and that’s ok. Honestly, if you are from Chicago, expect to get dropped by KD, KKG, XO, PM, and likely DDD and AXO. It has nothing to do with how cute or smart you are or how good your conversation was at a party and everything to do with what high school you attended and how many actives you already know. Don’t beat yourself up about that, they aren’t your people…but also, don’t believe the hype that they are top houses. They are top houses for Southern girls. Another thing that nobody talks about during recruitment is that it is all calculated. Houses knows the top girls they are interested in and will make sure those girls are given a lot of attention during the parties and that may change as the week progresses. How do you know if the house really likes you? If you are introduced to an officer of the house, that is a good sign. If they bring you to a seat in the center of the room (like a sofa in the center of their living room), that is a good sign (rather than on the floor against the wall in the back). If you meet a lot of girls, that’s a good sign. It’s all orchestrated and I’d pref the houses that are treating you well. There is absolutely no difference in the Greek experience if you are in Old Row v. New Row. I’m in a New Row house and we have swaps with frats, formals, tailgates, etc. just like Old Row. I’ve attended frat formals every year. I have never once attended a frat party or met a frat guy that cared about my letters. A couple of times Old Row girls have gasped in surprise when I’ve told them my house because I wasn’t a troll like they expected but, honestly, that idiotic reaction is pretty rare too. If you get a bid from any house that makes you feel like home, you’re going to make lifelong friends and have a great time. The key is try not to pretend you are something that you are not because of some stupid rank because it’s those girls that need up in a house they hate…and that happens in every single house in this campus.
