I actually had the exact (like, exact) same experience as one of these girls, except I didn’t drop. Watching the vid was like she had pulled all the thoughts out of my head. Joining a bottom house can be extremely emotionally confusing because even if you’re happy to be there, the girls standing around you every day for a week have been openly talking about how they’re going to go in and try their hardest to get dropped. Before the pref party the girl standing next to me literally told me “if I get this house I’m going home.” Like how are you supposed to be excited to accept a bid after that? There’s definitely not the same excitement that’s going on at other houses on bid day, and yeah it sucked. Did I eventually make great friends and hold positions, yes. But the negative impression from the first semester was hard to get past and I don’t blame either of them for dropping if they really felt like they didn’t belong. All that said, I thought the chi o’s comments about the small house and bad swap themes were a total cop out. Other than that it was pretty spot on.
