If you have to ask what the south is or what the border states are then you are prob a Yankee. If you do not consider VA a southern state then you def are a Yankee. Yes, northern VA has had a bunch of northerners come down and ruin it, but many, many families in northern VA are from the south and very proud of it. And the rest if VA is very southern. Virginia was the home to the Capitol of the CSA. By just deciding a state isn't going to be part of the south anymore because some northerners moved to one area of it, is the reason why we are not open to people from the north! You have no respect for tradition or where our families come from. There are many people from VA who have families that fought and died for the state if VA, and regardless of what side your family fought on (if any), is very rude and disrespectful to disregard those who died for their state. I mean my gosh, Gen. Robert E Lee is from VA! Furthermore, you had to ask if NC is a border state? Can you be more offensive? But I guess if some northerners decide to move there then suddenly some know-it-all Yankees will deem it not part of the south. If you people want to fit in here so badly, it is recommended you mind our history, people and traditions. Also, you make it hard for girls coming down south because you only add to the sterotype of the "typical Yankee"... Not fair to them at all!
