I saw the bid lists, and APhi, DG, and GPhi all took a lot of girls from the midwest and CA (where all three sororities are really strong, but not sure that was really a factor). Ultimately, if Bama keeps pulling in more out of state students the newer chapters will probably continue to get better, since the "Old Row" chapters will be stuck with their legacies.
