Yes, you are missing something. It really has nothing to do with the southerness of the house but rather the pulling from a minority of the PMNs. By becoming insular and not realizing that the campus has changed dramatically over the past 10 years or so, these houses are becoming irrelevant. The campus is benefiting greatly from the regional diversity, the incoming GPA and test scores are higher and higher each year. Not all OR houses are penalized for being southern, just the ones that create 2 tiers of sisters and relegate their filler girls to second class sisters. The houses that are put down for being so in-state focused are because they pull friends, neighbors, and other connections that may be safe but are not always the best for the house. These houses have more of a high school feel, complete with cliques and openly mean girls towards their own sisters. My OR house has discussed this a lot and we are better for embracing and welcoming top quality PNMs, no matter where they are from. We do not want our house to look or feel like our high schools so we are rushing all PNMs looking for those that fit best with our values and will fit with our sisters. This is not the case for all houses that are typically put down because of being southern it is about more than geography.
