Being the sorority/fraternity name is copyrighted along with the letters, a person not entitled to wear the letters could face civil action. Usually, it doesn't get to that. Sometimes people are just asked not to wear them or they get sent a cease/desist letter and that solves the problem. As a previous poster mentioned all nationals are very worried about their reputation and are stressing everyday what some member may do, let alone having someone not in the organization getting caught doing something stupid while wearing their letters.
