As someone already said it isn't about the money. It's about the connections and who your people are. That's it. If you ran in the same social circles as the other old row sorority/frat members, went to the same private school, and you are an upstanding person, then you are in. No one looks at the size of your house for that. That isn't to say that people who are from out of state don't get in because they they do! That is a misconception too. It's just that the term old money doesn't really refer to how much money is in your parents bank account, but instead where your people came from and who you know. May not make sense to an outsider, but that is how it seems to be.
