Two kids at tragically passed away at Cornell in the last years (Google the SAE and PhiPsi incidents). My older brother went to Cornell too, and supposedly it was common for top frats to lock away pledges in basements/cellars for the weekend; strip them down to their underwear, blindfold them, and feed them nasty stuff; and also just force them to drink until they atleast puked. Overall, things have somewhat toned down now- but still pretty horrendous and grueling. But lots of kids make it through to join upper/top houses. If you don’t want that, then rush upper-mid and mid houses.
