Sororities are looking for girls who will be dues paying members for 4 years. Their budgets rely on it. If they can only count of 3 years worth of dues from you, a freshman will look better on paper. Also, you completely hang out with your pledge class. All the freshmen will be in the dorms. For many of the sororities, sophomores also live together either in the dorms or in a designated apartment complex. If you are not a freshman going in, you will still be a member of the "freshman" class. As a transfer, you might not fit in as well.
