An artificial cap is to have pre-set numbers of new member classes and chapter totals. Chapter sizes here are way, way too big, and negatively affect the membership experience, so something will have to be done. An artificial cap means that it won't matter how many pnm's go through recruitment; the new member classes won't be allowed to exceed a certain number in order to keep chapter memberships lower and lots of girls will get cut completely out of being in a sorority simply because there won't be room for them in any chapter. What usually happens when sororities feel that they are getting too big, at NORMAL schools with a HEALTHY sorority system, is that new sororities are added and SUPPORTED and they get established after a few years. Then the house membership totals go down to manageable numbers again. As it stands, any NPC sorority would be crazy to come into this environment, and high schoolers will think twice about wanting to come to Ole Miss because there will be a much lower chance of getting a bid to ANY house at all.
