This is the truth. My understanding of Univ. of Arkansas' Greek system is that the sororities there have been very supportive of new chapters. And while I don't think they're as competitive as Ole Miss, it's still a competitive system. There are MANY factors involved that go beyond the need to make the houses evened out in size and perhaps smaller overall. There's the cost of a house (millions), the need for plenty of alumni locally to support the house and yes, the need for a supportive Greek system. Now there's the issue of land too although that's pretty minor compared to the other factors listed. I know there've been sororities invited to present in the past (when ADPI and Phi did) that declined due to the unsupportive atmosphere here. Makes sense - you can colonize at somewhere like Arkansas where it is supportive and your new chapter has a real shot at doing well. If I were involved in colonizing, I'd go there in a heartbeat over a place where there's no support. As for supporting new chapters, it's not a good thing when even a long-existing chapter like Theta has had little support through the year which is another reason why sororities are hesitant to colonize here. They get bashed for the "type" of members they have, for being this and not being that. Any system that truly wants to grow their Greek system will support every house, whether it's new or not. Another example is how Alpha Phi has been bashed, again for having a certain type of member. It's no wonder it's hard to get new chapters here.
