some universal truths

Poster Message:
Please feel free to chime in if these aren't the case for your house, but I feel like these are pretty solid across the board. 1. All membership selection is a secret. No one who actually cares about their chapter will divulge that information to someone not in their chapter. 2. All chapters select members differently. For some chapters, it is part of their ritual. I could say "my chapter picks PNM names out of a hat and unless we get 25 'no' votes, she moves on to the next round" and it wouldn't make a difference since everyone on here is anonymous so there's no way to verify if what I'm saying is true. So even if someone on here says "I'm not an XYZ but XYZ is an amazing chapter and they don't let their alums have any say in MS" - why would you believe them? If they're not really an XYZ, they wouldn't know the truth anyway. 3. Alumni advisors in all houses help with recruitment. To what degree is different between chapters. However, I think it's fair to say that no one person can make or break a PNM's recruitment. No one active can guarantee you a bid even if you were BFFs and next door neighbors for 18 years and she pinky promised you a bid. The alumni advisor may have more "sway" if they know more information about a PNM that could cause them to get released, like their GPA. 4. Most actives will never know where PNMs rank on their lists or what their scores or GPAs are, because if that bottom-ranked girl on your pref list comes to the house on bid day, would you want the entire chapter to know where they ranked? If a chapter member loves a PNM and scores her well but she doesn't come back the next day, it could be because she was a GPA cut or she had a QR the active didn't know about, but that's why you're supposed to trust that your sisters are keeping the best interest of the chapter in mind when they vote. 5. Knowing any specific information about how a chapter selects PNMs or their level of alumni involvement will not help you in recruitment. You don't pick your chapter, they pick you, and you learn how they do it when you're initiated. if at that point you don't like how it's done, feel free to drop or transfer to a chapter where it's different, but there's no guarantees it will be.
