Recs are important for many houses; some lower tier houses will pledge someone without one. You'd almost for sure be cut from top tier houses without connections but that's true for girls from many places. Connections are somewhat important for mid-tier houses. The biggest issue is being here only one year. As the other poster said, I can't imagine a house being willing to use up a pledge "slot" for someone here for that short a time. They want girls for 4 years or at least 3. I usually always encourage girls to rush, whether they're here without connections or an upperclassman who could be in a house a few years, but in your case, I honestly don't think it would be worth your while and certainly I don't see it worth a house's while to have someone for so short a time, to be really honest. By the way, are you going to be a freshman or upperclassman? Why only a year if you're coming all the way from Australia?
