My Mom went to the University of Tennessee back in the day (feel free to mock her. I do), and she said the same thing about her sorority. She was shocked that we can wear them without being in full make up with cute hair. She also couldn't wear her letters at the gym. My sorority doesn't do this, and it doesn't appear any of the others do, but I don't know if others had rules.
