Yes, write thank you notes and a small token of gratitude and thanks is super kind too, although not required. I've watched my mom and aunts sit and take hours to write recs for girls. If you want a good rec it's much more time consuming than just a quickie on line fill in the blanks questionnaire. It's not sucking up either to show gratitude, it's just plain manners and respecting someone's time and effort.
