So there is a lot of chatter about dis-affiliating. It can happen but will likely no happen unless you want to build new houses and move off campus. The current houses unlike popular belief are not owned by the Fraternity or Sorority Nationals. The good majority are held by individual private investors that were prior members of the fraternity/sorority thus why you typically see the name of the Greek organization on the house and then some other term after such as a old pledge class identifier because their members own the house ect.... very few if any are held by national organizations. They want and will almost require the houses to be affiliated with IU so they can utilize the checklist system that IU uses. This system can hold your degree until all bills have been paid. This links those houses to getting their full rent due and never having to file a lawsuit. Also after you graduate and get a job if the employer asks to see a copy of your degree IU will not release it until you have been removed from this checklist. This means if 20 years down the road you go for a promotion and it requires you to show proof of graduation you will not be able to do so until this debt has been satisfied. So as far as disaffiliation it’s 100% possible but not likely while living in the current houses. And the owners of those houses could make 2-3 times what they are worth by selling them to the University so they truly don’t care either way. They are all in for Greek life as long as they are making money but when that stops those houses will be gone.
