IU was bombarded for years with requests from complaining students, parents and alums to expand their sorority chapter numbers because too many disappointed women were unable to join a group, even when bed rush was eliminated and minimum quota installed. ASA, TPA, SK and DPhiE looked into joining the IU sorority mix UNDERSTANDING FROM THE GET-GO there would be little to no housing opportunity quickly available, just a promise that many women on campus were very interested in joining sororities. These groups joined IU knowing sisterhood can mean much more than living in a house. These four have all done as well as can be expected by offering values, teachings, standards and opportunities every sorority delivers without the benefit of housing. No woman who goes thru recruitment is forced to join an unhoused group, but many are joining and reaping the benefits. It has been, and always should be, each sorority group's individual decision and responsibility to secure housing (or not) for themselves according to their abilities and needs. As far as I know IU does not require the newest 4 sororities to acquire housing on par with that of the other 19 houses.
