18 year old girls are told this because, well, like it or not, that's basically how rankings are determined. The sororities that are considered higher tier, have had, on average, over a period of the last say 4-6 years, girls that are/were considered to be more attractive than those in the lower tiers. Same with the guys for that matter. It's not just the sororitys. Also it's not just looks, money plays a big role in it. Is it shallow? Kind of, but that's just life. No one is saying you're worth less as a person for being in a lower sorority. If it makes you feel better, most people actually in greek life know that there is a lot more variation and subjectivity in said average level of attractiveness than a straight tier list would otherwise indicate.
