Hey class of 2023! SO many of you girls know that the sorority scene is something to look forward to at Roanoke. To start there are two main scenes: the above-grounds (Chi-O, DG, ASA) & the undergrounds ( Eta Phi, Ivy, Gamma Eta). Above grounds are similar to what you think of when you think sorority. They are recognized by nationals and have rules and regulations. They can't have their own parties, but they go out and social with frats on campus. They are more of the "good girl" type. They have their advantages and disadvantages. They are the most respected among the sororities. Be warned, the above grounds rush later than undergrounds, so they will often spread lies and rumors about the undergrounds to try to keep all the "good girls" from going underground before they can officially start recruiting. Do not listen to the rumors, at least check the scene out for yourself. That is the most important thing to remember, just because one group of girls is not for someone does not mean they are not for you. Undergrounds are more secretive and a "sisterhood". They have their own off-campus houses and can have their own parties. They are more of the "girl girl, gone FUN type". The girls are nice and still respectable, just do not want to have the pressure of national always keeping a close eye out on what they can and cannot do. They are here for a good time, not a long time. The pledging process is more intimate and the bonds you form are stronger than that of an above ground.
