Before his rise to fame, Hefner graduated from the University in 1949 after two-and-a-half years. He majored in psychology and double minored in art and creative writing. While at the University, Hefner drew cartoons for The Daily Illini and served as a managing editor for Shaft, a campus humor magazine, where he introduced a “Coed of the Month” feature. He was a Psi Chi honor society member, not a frat, and the "Grenada Club," and according to the site for the Police Training Institute: "The building was built in the 1920s and was known as the “Granada Club House.” It housed university students until 1988, including famous alums Hugh Hefner, Alex Agase, and Allen Sherman – writer of the song “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh (A Letter from Camp).” Its reputation in the 1970 era was as a rather raunchy indie resident house, and I recall that Arte Johnson, also '49 alum, may have lived there as well. Sherman's official sites fail to mention, but seems obvious the connection to his famous song, and "Camp Granada," likely an inside joke between old college buddies.
