You don’t get “penalized” for for suiciding bidding, that’s a myth!! It’s doesn’t change your placement on desired bid lists, it just overall will make you less likely to end up in any sorority. This isn’t exactly how it works and it’s complicated so I’ll break it down into a couple scenarios, but essentially, sororities will have two “bid lists” after pref. The first list is their ideal PC, the second list is girls they would still extend bids to. If you rank them number 1 and they have you on the first list, you get a bid. If you rank them 1, but they have you on the second list, the sorority will first go through its entire first list and see if they can match everyone like the above scenario (they both rank each other first) If they have another girl on their first list who gets matched in this way to another sorority, the next girl they would want from their second list is now added to their first list and they keep going through like this. So in the scenario where you ranked them 1 but they had you on the second list, you could be pulled up to the first list and still join your number 1. If your number 1 fills their pledge class before getting to you, two things can happen: 1) Your number 2 still has space in their pledge and you join them 2) Both pledge classes are full - but you still get a bid! Here is where the difference from suicide bidding comes in. In the case where you put both choices down, even though both pledge classes are full, you still get to join one! I’m not sure how exactly they decide which one you join. BUT if you suicide bid and the sorority you put down fills their pledge class before getting to you, you are dropped and get no bid Summary: If you don’t suicide bid, you are guaranteed a bid at one of your options If you do suicide bid, there is a possibility that you will not get a bid
