I can only speak on behalf of my house, for us it's something like this: If you are invited back for 2nd round, it basically just means you gave us a good first impression and we want to see more of you. If you are invited to the 3rd round, it means we think you would might truly be a fit and want more time with you to get to know a little bit more about you besides the basics of where you're from, if you like your roommate, etc. And if you get invited to pref, we ~basically~ are ready to invite you into our sisterhood. This might be different for other chapters, but we don't invite anyone to pref who we wouldn't be willing to give a bid to. Now, BEING INVITED TO PREF DOES NOT GUARANTEE A BID. If you come to pref and say something rude or tell us you don't want our house, you will probably be placed lower on the bid list. But pref is the serious round where it isn't just small talk and surface level conversation anymore, an invitation to pref means we are seriously considering you for the chapter and we want to know if you are seriously considering us too. This is how you'll know if you were dropped: After each round, you are going to decide the sororities you want to go to back to. The rank of those sororities does not matter. The rank of the ones you do not want to go back to matters though. At the beginning of each round, your pi chi will give you your schedule. All of the houses on your schedule invited you back for the upcoming round. Ideally (but this almost NEVER happens), you get back the maximum houses possible for the round and they are the ones that you wanted back. However, realistically, you will be dropped by one or more of them. This is why the rank for your bottom houses matters. Say that Theta was on your list of houses you wanted to go back to, but they dropped you. Now there's one spot open on your schedule. And say that XO was on the list of houses you didn't want to go back to, but they wanted to invite you back, they will bump up to Theta's spot (this is why the rank of houses you don't want to go to matters - your #1 should be one that was just okay, because you will likely be going back). If Theta is not on your schedule, that's how you know they dropped you. To summarize: If you put a house on your list of ones you would like to return to and they aren't on your schedule for the next round, they dropped you. The only way you will never NOT know if a chapter dropped you is if you get a full schedule back the next day of every single house that you put down as wanting to go back to. Because all your top houses asked you back, there is not room for the houses you didn't want on your schedule. Again, do not count on this scenario - you will more than likely be invited back to a house you didn't put on your top list! So when they say it's a "mutual" selection, it's really not. The houses do the choosing.
