Subject:
Advice for Freshman Considering Greek Life at Miami

Poster Message:
Hopefully this will help some First Years who come here looking for advice. 1. See the “x” in the top right of your screen. Click that and forget you ever saw this site. There is very little good information on this site. Never come back. 2. There is no official rank. There are metrics you can find like numbers of people in new member classes, GPA, and cost from the office of fraternity and sorority life, but no one uses any of those when they post rankings here. Most ranks are completely made up and are vaguely related to how hard it is to get a bid. 3. Every chapter has its strengths and weaknesses. A frat may have an awesome house but throw terrible parties. A sorority may be bad at recruiting but have an incredible sisterhood. The best chapter is the best chapter FOR YOU. Some people want mandatory social events 5 days a week, while others want something more chill. Both options are valid. 4. Fraternity recruitment and sorority recruitment are two very different systems. Fraternity recruitment is much more laid back, but there is a lot of guesswork for the potential new members (PNMs) as to whether a chapter is actually interested in them. Sorority recruitment is highly structured but you know after each round who still could see you as a sister. Girls - you cannot just rush certain chapters. You go to as many chapters as will have you - and never talk to some chapters no matter how much you may want to join. It’s called RFM, and it is too complex to explain here. Do look it up and understand how the process works. Just know if a boy tells you “you should rush XYZ sorority” that really might not be an option for you, and you shouldn’t get your hopes up. 5. Every chapter has social functions, philanthropy events, and leadership opportunities. Every chapter will give you the chance to meet people, have fun, and feel part of the Miami community. EVERY CHAPTER. Every chapter here is active and has value. 6. Comparison is the thief of joy. Your experience is what YOU make of it. You can be miserable in a “top” chapter and happy in a chapter that isn’t a top chapter (I’m not calling any chapter here a bottom chapter, Greek life here is too good). Find a chapter that celebrates you and helps you be your best self. 7. Once you join a chapter, no one really cares about “rank”. I have friends in all “tiers” of fraternities and sororities. No one has once snubbed me because of my letters. Go Greek! Now seriously, get off this site.
