Everyone listen up because this has gotten out of hand. Greek life at JMU is currently the most toxic community I’ve ever seen in my 3 years here. Im tired of all of this tribal hatred between frats and there is really no point in it. Obviously every fraternity thinks they are the best but ultimately who cares if we can all have our parties and darties and enjoy ourselves every weekend. Genuinely the problems we run into is the absolute ridiculousness from fsl and the school. If there is anyone we should be mad at it needs to be them. Lately it has gotten out of hand not only does it seem like they want Greek life to end as a whole they also don’t agree with having parties. Just as early as Tuesday Jen (Head of Student Life) sent out a email to everyone in Greek life saying there has been an “increased level of parties” and that she would like to do what she can to avoid “an out of control weekend”. First off this is a joke because she is basing the facts off increased level of parties based on that there are more permits being applied for with the city and fsl. Don’t let her fool you if anything with all the frats that are being suspended (by her) there is less parties. Over the past year FSL have made it increasingly difficult to register parties making it more hoops for fraternities to jump through to host a party and also punishing fraternities for not registering. Of course nobody wants to get punished for not registering so it’s caused more people to register. Ultimately we as a Greek life community are left with 2 choices that other schools have been left with before. Option 1 is the first we should pursue and that is to start speaking out against FSL and start trying to find common ground with them. Second option is to create a student led FSL it has been done at other schools and it allows students to run the Greek life the only downside is more things will go straight through the city and the police but they don’t care nearly as much as fsl do about a couple fraternity parties. Let’s build each other up and work together about making Greek life a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
