The Benefits Of Going Greek At A Small University

Greeks From Smaller Schools Stick Together

At my school, which is comprised of around 3,000 students, there are only 4 sororities and 4 fraternities. I’m a part of the biggest chapter on campus which has a little over 70 women. For bigger schools, that may sound crazy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Here are a few reasons why:

We have a very tight-knit community
Unless you’re a new member, it’s guaranteed that you recognize just about every Greek face on campus. You don’t even have to talk to someone to know their name; you have seen them around campus at their organization’s events or on social media. It’s not weird to smile or wave at them, because you both know that you share a common bond. Since the classes here mostly cap at around 30 people you will likely have all of your courses with another sorority/fraternity member, if not several of them. And, yes, you will probably end up sitting next to them. That’s not to say that we don’t hang out with anyone else who isn’t Greek; we just end up spending the most amount of time with these people.

We support each other
Since there are just 8 organizations on campus, you know what each organization’s philanthropy is and what they do to raise money. When you need people to sign up for an event, you can guarantee that the other organizations will support you, whether it be a food fundraiser for chapter funds or sports tournaments for your philanthropy. My campus holds an event called “Eat with the Greeks”, which is a friendly fundraiser competition to see who can sell the most of their ‘featured’ food, which can consist of anything from fried Oreos to blue juice. Even though these events are held for the entire school, since we all know and support each other, it’s guaranteed that the majority of the people there are Greek.

Greek apartments versus Greek housing
At bigger schools, each Greek organization gets their own house, some even mansions. At my school, we have a Greek village that is comprised of several different apartments that each belong to different organizations. Even though the apartments themselves are solely for members of that organization, there are 3 different sororities or fraternities right across the hall from you. In my opinion, that helps strengthen the bond between all of us so we are not isolated to our own organization’s house. To give you an idea of how small the village is, the prime gathering spot is a picnic table. However, that just proves that we don’t need big houses or more people to have a great experience in Greek life; we are able to see past all of the luxuries that bigger schools have and realize that it’s the bonds we have with one another that makes our experience truly unique.

In conclusion, going Greek at a small school is a great opportunity because you truly get to know everyone inside and outside of your organization. It brings us closer and makes us stronger as we work together to make our campus a better place.
