If you had to make a guess, which decade in American history founded the highest number of new Greek organizations? Which decade do you think created the least amount? We’ve looked at the numbers of Greek organizations being founded from the 1920s through 2009 and here are the results.

The Decade That Founded the Least Sororities

Only 1 sorority was founded in the 1860s, 1930s, and 1960s. Notably, the very popular Pi Beta Phi was the only sorority founded in the 1860s. What’s also interesting to note for you history buffs is that the 1960s was the Women’s Movement.

The Decade That Founded the Least Fraternities The 1870’s, 1880’s, 1930s, and 2000s all only saw 2 new fraternities each.

The Decade That Founded the Least Fraternities and Sororities It’s a tie between the 1880s and the 1930s. During each of these decades only 3 Greeks organizations were founded. My initial guess was that it was during the Civil War and both the world wars, but guess not. Actually, 20 organizations can trace their founding back to the 1910s which was the decade that also saw WWI. The 1930’s does make a lot of sense though because this was the decade of the Great Depression.

The Decade That Founded the Most Sororities The 1990s saw 38 new sororities. This was the decade to the multicultural organizations. Sororities like Sigma Sigma Rho for women of South Asian descent and multi-cultural sororities like Theta Nu Xi sprung up across the country during the 90s.

The Decade That Founded the Most Fraternities The 1990s saw 19 new fraternities come to life. Again, this was mostly led by the boom in multi-cultural organizations like Zeta Phi Rho.

The Decade That Founded the Most Fraternities and Sororities 1990s, of course. 57 in total. The dot com world wasn’t the only aspect of the country that was experiencing a bubble. I call it a bubble because between 1980-1999 this country gained 88 new Greek organizations, but in the first decade of the 2000s we only saw a total of 10.
