Im in a bigger fraternity and this is how it works. We start a rush list from recs, guys friends from home, etc in the fall of last year. They start getting invited to parties throughout the spring and we start giving out bids. Guys also contact us through email and get on the rush list and come to the spring events. In the summer we have lake parties and events to meet rushees and extend bids. So by the time school starts, a large part of the pledge class has been picked. Almost all the fraternities will hold on to atleast a couple spots and still give bids when school starts, but the top ones may only have a couple open spots.
