Things I Wish I Knew When Apartment Hunting

College is over and you do not want to live in your parents’ basement forever…so it is time to start looking for a pad of your own. But this process is a tiring one, usually fraught with many a headache. After just going through the apartment hunting process myself, I wanted to share with you some of the things I wish I’d known when I began this process so you do not have to learn on the fly.

Here are some things I wish myself had known going into the process, which might steer you in the right direction.

1. Know what you must have, and know what you can compromise on.
Sorry to break it to you, but it’s very unlikely you’ll find lodging with every last thing you’d want. Have frank discussions with your roommate(s) (or yourself) on what you are and aren’t willing to live with(out).

2. Listings are not always up to date.
If the property has been on the market for a while, or if it looks like the website for a complex hasn’t been updated for some time, it’s likely that at least something has changed. (Cost of rent, pet policy, etc.) Verify everything with the landlord when you actually speak to them.

3. It’s totally normal to bring someone with you.
Seriously. Feel free to take your mom, or another “adultier” adult who has experience with renting and housing to come along for a second opinion.

4. Apartments will go faster than you may think.

If you’ve found a place that seems perfect, chances are another apartment hunter in your shoes also has found the same one. Obviously signing the lease and making that deposit on your first apartment is not something you should rush through, but keep in mind that if you don’t act on the ideal place soon, it won’t be there long.

5. Renters’ insurance is a thing. And it’s a life saver.
Some apartment complexes will require renters insurance before you even sign the lease. Even if that’s not the case, it’s certainly not a bad idea. In many cases, you can tack it onto your pre-existing car insurance for a reasonable price.

With all of that in mind, happy apartment hunting all!
