Soon across the nation girls looking to go Greek will be returning to campus and gearing up for recruitment. Here are some questions these girls should expect from the active sisters and additional insight on how to best answer each question
.

1. How do you like your freshmen year so far?

2. Where are you from?

3. What’s your major?

4. What made you want to join a sorority?

5. What did you do in high school?

6. Why did you choose this school?

7. What is your favorite part of recruitment so far?

8. Are you interested in holding leadership positions?

Remember, during recruitment the houses are trying to get to know you, and you should be trying to get to know them. The best way to get to know each other is to avoid one-word answers and to keep the conversation two-sided. Here are some responses to these questions that can get your conversation moving in the right direction:

1. How do you like your freshmen year so far?

Talk about your ups and downs with the year so far, be honest, but don’t over share. Talk about new experiences, things you do around campus, and the reasons why you’ve decided to Go Greek.

Keep in mind, houses assume you are a freshmen, if you are older or a transfer student, make sure to let them know, and explain why you have decided to partake in Spring Rush.

2. Where are you from?

Talk about your town, your family and friends. It’s best to bring up stories from your town. After you are done, ask the girl you are talking to about her town. Talk about her favorite parts about being home.

3. What’s your major?

If you are undeclared, that is okay. Just simply explain your interests and why you are having such a hard time deciding on what you want to study. If you already decided, be honest, talk about what interests you about your major and why you chose it to begin with. After explaining yours, ask her questions about why she chose her major and what classes outside of her major she finds interesting. Keep in mind, even if you don’t have the same major, it’s possible to have taken or want to take university courses that you are both interested in.

4. What made you want to join a sorority?

Talk about how you made friends in grade school and high school with whom you developed strong sisterhoods with and how you want to want to form similar bonds with people during your college years. If you attend a large school, you can talk about how being in a sorority will make the school feel smaller and more manageable. It certainly never hurts to mention that you feel a sorority is the best way to get involved on your campus and in the community.

5. What did you do in high school?

For anyone who was at least involved in a couple activities in high school, this should be easy to answer. To better get to know each girl, you should also ask how they were involved in high school. Members inquire about your past to look for hints as to how you could contribute to the chapter.

6. Why did you choose this school?

One of you reasons for attending the college you chose might because you knew an alumni or you had friends who were also going to that school. It is important that you make it clear that you had other (more independent) reasons that led you to your decision. You don’t want to look like a follower who doesn’t make their own decisions. Mentioning that another one of your reasons for attending your school was that you knew the school had a rich Greek life will also display that you are confident in your commitment to go Greek.

7. What is your favorite part of recruitment so far?

Mention how much you appreciate the opportunity to get to know each chapter and their members because it’s a great way to find your best fit. Don’t say anything negative about the recruitment process.

8. Are you interested in holding leadership positions?

You probably have little idea as to what positions are available and what responsibilities come with each post. This would be a great time to ask questions that fill you in. A good follow-up question would be what positions new members usually hold.

Topics to Avoid:

1. Bible, Booze, Bitches, Boys, and Bongs

In sororities, these are known as the 5 B’s, and every girl you will meet should be avoiding these topics as well.

2. Specific Recruitment Process Questions

Don’t ask any questions regarding how the members of a chapter decide what candidates they call back for the next round. The response will always be “it’s a mutual selection process”.  Focus more on getting to know the chapter you are visiting and less about what they do internally during Rush.

The key to a successful recruitment is getting past those base-level questions and answers and towards stories and memories that lead to bonding between you and the girl you are speaking to. Keep in mind; you don’t have that much time when you are meeting girls, so having an in-depth conversation that you both will remember always makes the process easier.
