Even on campus that is greater than 30% greek, 7 out of 10 of the students are not in a sorority or fraternity. Are you just going to miss out on that many friendships just because you are in greeklife and they are not? Stop. That’s just stupid. College is about meeting new people and making lasting friendships. Here’s 5 tips on how to keep a GDI as a friend.

Make an effort to meet their friends
Unless you need to take a hard look at yourself, you have already realized that there are cool people outside of greeklife on your campus. Your GDI friends are a gateway to get to know those people. Go out of your way to meet your GDI friend’s friends.

Include them when possible
Just as you should want to them to include you, you should want to include them. Introduce them to your brothers and sisters. Have fun together.

Get off campus with them
On many campuses it is impossible to walk around and not be constantly aware that you are part of a greek organization. There’s nothing like getting off campus with a GDI friend to set your greek life aside for a second.

Accept that greeklife wasn’t for them
This is probably the most important tip for keeping a GDI as a friend. Take a deep breath and accept that they chose not to be involved in greek life. No matter how hard you try, they aren’t changing their mind. Eventually, it just gets annoying for them if you keep trying to persuade them to join or to convince them that they made the wrong choice.

Share a hobby
Being in a fraternity of a sorority is very much like a hobby. You and your brothers/sister both share mutual interests. Create your own mini brotherhood/sisterhood with your GDI friends by sharing in a hobby.
