It’s finally October, which means things are about to get spooky! Halloween is a favorite holiday of children and adults alike. While you’re in college, you’re bound to see decorations, parties and costumes galore, so make the most of it! Many campuses celebrate the holiday for an entire week leading up to it, with parties and events every night of “Halloweek.” There are a few things to remember when gearing up for the spookiest day of the year.

Start Early
When you’re planning your costume for All Hallow’s Eve, start early. This gives you enough time to search different stores for the perfect outfit and accessories to complete your look. It also allows ample time to order online, or make your own. Plus, shopping early ensures the stores won’t sell out! Also, be creative! There will be a plethora of cats, sexy nurses and policemen. Think outside of the box and make yourself stand out from the crowd. If you’re short on cash, DIY it! You’d be surprised how far you can go with what you and your friends have in your closets. You can even host a homemade craft session in your dorm with your friends.

Facebook Owns Your Photos
One important thing to remember when you are selecting your costumes is to avoid insensitive or offensive costumes. Over the past few years, universities have sent out letters prior to Halloween night warning students about costume selection, even threatening to expel students who violate this rule. Avoid wearing costumes that are culturally insensitive, racist, terrorist related or just plain crude. Don’t dress up like a school shooting victim or Dr. Walter Palmer and Cecil the Lion. Once the photo of you posted as something stupid is put online, you’ll never be able to fully erase it.
Try Something New
Try to participate in Halloween events, other than parties. Sure, there are going to be plenty of them on campus for you to hit up, but don’t forget about other events too. Check out your campus’ Halloween traditions and see what it offered. Some organizations on campus fund haunted houses on campus. (If you’re in Fraternity or Sorority, try hosting one yourself!) Look into off campus activities as well. Many places have an abundance of haunted houses, hayrides and other events for Halloween. There may even be some local walking tours and street festivals. Ghost tours are also great Halloween (and all year) events, especially you live in an area like Salem, MA or St. Augustine, FL that are rumored to be haunted towns. Be Safe
Most importantly, be safe! Travel in groups. Wandering off by yourself is never a good idea, especially at night. Make sure to keep an eye on your drink and how much you’re drinking. If you do get drunk, do not drive home. Take public transportation, a cab, have a designated driver, or plan to spend the night. And remember, costumes do not equal consent, and neither does being drunk.

Don’t forget to have fun and enjoy your Halloween night (or week)!
