Remember as a kid hand-me-down from an older sibling were the worst? Well, now that you are in college hand-me-downs don’t seem that bad. By now we have also learned just who had the best hand-me-downs—parents. It’s Mom and Dad…they won’t care if you walk out of the house this August or September with some of these stuff. Even if they don’t exactly know at that time that you are taking it. Here are some of the top items your parents have that you should be taking back with you for the start of fall semester.

Couch
This might be the granddaddy of all steals. College couches are generally pretty gross after 1-2 years of use. Head back to campus in the fall with a clean, adult-looking trophy for your living room.

Coffee table
Not as essential as a couch, but a good coffee table has the potential to take an otherwise spartan-looking college living room and really elevate its sophistication.

Blankets
Again, these are items that rarely (if ever) get washed in college. Your parent’s blankets are clean and smell like home.
Lawn chairs
Let’s face it, college students don’t often think about lawn furniture. Yet, we all know that when we get back on campus in the late-summer all we are going to want to do is sit in our front yards and day party. Lawn chairs will be essential.

Blender
While you are sitting outside on your new lawn chairs on an 80 degree Saturday in September, you are going to want a refreshing drink. Don’t forget the blender. Plus, you can convince yourself you are going to maintain a healthy diet throughout the school year by juicing every morning.
Silverware/Dishes
Mom and Dad’s silverware and dishes are just nicer than what you have at college. They probably have too many sets anyway. No one will even notice they are missing.
Throwback clothes
Make sure to raid their closets to see if Dad has a throwback jersey or if Mom has kept something that’s finally back in style. Don’t forget that once you arrive for fall semester that Halloween is just around the corner.

Holiday decorations
Like you are going to buy these for yourself? One of the strongest triggers for homesickness can be when you look around your college apartment during the holidays and don’t see any decorations. Don’t let this happen to you. Go in the attic and get a plastic jack-o-lantern, wreath, some lights…just don’t take the whole tree.
Toiletries
Contact lens solution and razers cost a lot of money. Make sure to load up this summer before you leave the house.
Food
Okay, this one is obvious. You can’t start hoarding just yet…but when the time comes make sure you begin the semester with a full fridge and a stacked pantry.
