Congratulations! You got into one of best school’s in the country. First semester away from home is always fun because you get to meet new people and have new experiences without the watchful eyes of your parents. However it can also be a tough time, but there are some ways to help you get through it.

Free cold packs at McKinley Health Center
Feeling the sniffles coming? Head over to McKinley Health Center located a stone throw away from Allen Residence Hall! They have free cold packs filled with things to help you fight that cold. Free food is everywhere.
Being on a budget in college is a very real thing, especially since most of you guys have a limited number of meals every week that you can eat at the dining halls. Often your dorms will host events that often include pizza or you can head on over to the Illini Union where they host Illini Nights where there is always free food.

Branch out and join a club.
Don’t leave your door closed because there are friends on the other side of it waiting to meet you. There’s hundred of clubs on campus and you’re bound to find one you fit in! This is the time of your life that you get the chance to meet people from around the country and the world. Although Quad Day has passed, there’s a list of all RSOs located on the UIUC website! Go to class.
I know it’s tempting to sleep in and miss that 9 am, but more than likely you’ll be happy you went when you’re not cramming for your midterm the night before. Use safe rides.
During those late night study sessions in the Undergraduate Library and Grainger, safe rides is just a call away. No one wants to walk home when it’s late and cold outside and they will drop you off right in front of your dorm.

Free Therapy
McKinley has a mental health clinic that is free for students to set up appointments to help them through the tough times! Don’t be afraid to utilize the resources available to you! Learn the bus routes.
No one likes to walk when the weather starts to turn especially wet and cold. Learning which bus to take can save you a lot of time and efforts.
