3 Ways Recruitment Prepares You For Real Life

Rush may seem like it doesn’t require practical skills, or that any skill is involved at all, but there are actually great practical skills you pick up from rushing as a new member and as an active member of your chapter that will help you after the college days are over.

1. Being on Time

I do not subscribe to the excuse of “Greek time”, and neither should you. You cannot blame “Greek time” for why you were late to an interview, meeting with a professor, or any meeting that exists outside Greek life. Put an end to it with Greek events you currently attend, people will follow suit. Monday night meetings won’t run late, and you’ll have more time for Netflix, and we all want that.

2. Memorizing Names

No, you may not have been able to remember every girl you met day one of rush. You may not have known every name of the girl in your pledge class, but you did pick up on how to remember someone’s name during your brief conversation, and that’s a skill you’ll want when you’re meeting clients, in an interview, or networking with others to get your dream job.

3. How to Have a Conversation

I know what you’re thinking. “Wait, like, what? But, we just, like, talk about, like, pink?” In reality, learning how to hold a conversation is one of the most valuable lessons you will learn. Behind you are the days of awkward silences and wondering what to talk about next; you have speaking points now, you know what questions to ask to get people talking, you know how to steer a conversation and touch on certain topics.

There are plenty more skills you pick up during recruitment (for example, you learn how to stand in heels for 6+ hours), but if you walk away with these three, you’ve got a good base set of skills that are sure to benefit you for the rest of your life.
