10 Stereotypes A Sorority Girl Never Wants To Hear

There are a lot of less-than-flattering stereotypes that has been assigned to sorority girls. I’ve heard it all, from ditzy to blonde to rich to easy, etc. Since I am actually part of a sorority, I can happily put these rumors to rest and let you all know that these stereotypes are the farthest thing from the truth. Here are some of my personal favorite stereotypes that I have heard, and what I know a sorority girl hates hearing.

You pay for your friends

This is definitely one of the most common stereotypes a sorority girl hears, and yet it couldn’t be more false. While you do pay to be part of a sorority, those dues definitely do not cover friendship. However, a sorority will definitely bring sisters close together, and if you’re lucky, you’ll meet your lifelong friends.

All sorority girls do is party and drink
Sorority girls may participate in events such as Greek Week and Homecoming, but they are still exactly like every other college student. We all have to learn to balance work, school, socializing, etc. Not to mention philanthropy is a huge part of sororities, and sorority girls are proud to attend charity and philanthropic events just as much as they are excited to go to mixers.

Sorority girls only care about materialistic objects While there are sorority girls who do care about materialistic objects, there are also people who aren’t in sororities that care about the same thing. I personally couldn’t tell you the difference between designer clothes and knock off brands, nor do I care, and I can confidently say the same about many of my other sisters.

Sorority girls are girly-girls Could not be farther from the truth. Sure, there are some sororities that are very girly and love to wear pink (not that that’s a bad thing) but that’s not the case for most. In fact, most girls are very athletic in my sorority and have played sports throughout high school.

Sorority girls are only friends with their own sorority Some of my closest friends aren’t even in sororities, so I completely understand why any sorority girl would hate to hear this. I have a cousin in a different sorority as me; two of my friends from my hometown who go to the same school as me are in different sororities, etc. While it’s nice to have friends in your own sorority, most sorority girls have friends in all different sororities, as well as GDI’s.

Daddy's credit card pays for everything I am fortunate enough to have parents who have been able to support me throughout college, but that does not mean they pay for everything. In fact, most of my friends have held a job throughout college, and I still have to pay for myself if I want to buy clothes, drinks, go out to the movies, etc.

Sorority girls don't eat anything I have heard this stereotype so many times that it’s actually become comical to me. Please, just because you’re a sorority girl, that doesn’t mean you don’t like to pig out every once in a while. I like my mozzarella sticks and fries just as much as the next person.

Sorority girls don’t care about school The media portrays sorority girls as dumb blondes who only go to college so they can party and meet boys. This is the farthest thing from the truth. Not only do you need to have a certain GPA in order to rush, but also once you join a sorority you must maintain a good GPA, otherwise you’ll be put on probation.

Sorority girls only date frat boys I have never dated a frat boy, nor have any of my other friends in my sorority, so case in point. Not to mention there are plenty of GDI’s who know how to sweet talk sorority girls, way more than frat boys do.

Sorority girls only care about their looks I roll out of bed everyday and go to class in leggings, a sweatshirt and no makeup on, so if this were the case then I DEFINITELY would not be in a sorority. Sure, sorority girls like to look presentable (who doesn’t?) but we like hanging out in sweatpants and pajamas just as much as the next girl
