Feeling like you’re not on the right path with your chosen major? Guess what? You are not alone. Changing majors is a common occurrence. Just because it happens often, although, does not mean that it is an easy decision. Here are 10 signs that it might be time to make a change.

You can’t see yourself staying in the field long term – If a long future of what you’re studying doesn’t seem like the right fit, you are probably better off researching other options.

You’re not excited about the future – If your chosen plan of study does not give you even the slightest bit of excitement for the future, start considering a different career path.

You loathe the curriculum – In other words, if you are studying to be a journalist, and the thought of writing a paper makes you want to scream, you probably need to switch gears.

You struggle with the material – If you are flunking out of most of your classes, you should consider meeting with your advisor about your strengths and weaknesses. You may need to think about changing to a major that is aligned more with what you are good at.

Your career path does not look promising – Have you researched how successful you will be in procuring a job after graduation? If the situation looks bleak, reexamine your options.

Your program is small and poorly organized – How many people lead the department? What activities do they get involved in? How many days and times are offered for your required courses? Successful programs typically offer a good variety of options, people, and resources for their students.

You feel obligated to have declared it – Come from a long line of doctors? If this was the only motive for the major that you chose, you may want to consider how passionate you will be about it when you get out in the real world.

You continue to research other majors – If you find yourself wandering off into other “what if’s”, start wondering why.

You only chose it for financial gain – While financial security is certainly important, no amount of money will trump the misery that you will feel going to a job that you hate every day.

You don’t know why you chose it – Why did you choose your major to begin with? Are you passionate about it or was it just something that seemed easy to finish? It’s best to know why.
