making big feel small
by: miryWhat are ways the UA houses make such large chapters "feel small" in terms of promoting sisterhood? Are there like clubs within the chapter, or small groups on majors and interests, and stuff like that? With large chapters and lots of girls who know each other already from camps and high school, how do girls from the outside of those circles work in if they are shy (like me). Just wondering.

My cheater seats alphabetically at chapter, so you get to know all the older girls who sit around you each week. We also have "sisterhood events" monthly, where the whole house can go bowling, go see a movie, go skating, etc. my house didn't require this but I know houses like axo and chi o make you learn all the girls in the house, which seems realllly helpful, because I still don't know every girl in my sorority. My sorority also offers bible studies to whoever wants to join, intramurals are also a way to meet everyone! There's lots of opportunities, it's just depending on what YOU will put into it!

The pledge classes being so large can actually improve the sorority experience, if you let it. It is not ideal, of course, but there is a silver lining. The silver lining is that there will in all likelihood be an array of interests and personality types in each house. If you engage in activities and have a positive outlook on things, even things that you may see as not fun, the odds are strong you will really form bonds and click with a number of other new members and actives. In a smaller chapter house, there is a lot of need to "get it right" at pledge, which can sometimes be a crap shoot. If you or they get it wrong, the experience sours. With the larger houses like UA has, it is probably possible to "get it right" at any house.

Thank you. Good reminder too that it is what we choose to make of it.
