alpha phi - legit question

by: curious

Everybody always says here that Alpha Phi recruits based on looks, and that their nationals have said that. you'll also see people say that at other schools. But how do we actually know that when membership selection confidential? i'm just kind of curious how people know how their nationals set membership criteria?

Obviously you have been getting your information from scrolling through greekrank pages, especially the one over at UA. Facts that I know about are that APhi has been on a chapter-opening/recolonization spree over the last 10 years. I mean like crazy trying to catch up with larger national sorority membership numbers on known and popular campuses, and fast. They seem to have something to prove on the national level for some reason. Therefore, many of their chapters, particularly in the South, are much newer compared to older established sorority chapters. Without a network of connections and alumnae from these schools and regional areas to help recruit girls that people know something about and can vouch for, they SEEM to have a strategy of not focusing on qualities like good character, grades, involvement, leadership, and sisterhood material, but rather more heavily on looks and other superficial traits like popularity on social media. That is a fast way to get many girls quickly so they can bump their numbers up and get a house quickly and get their name out there. Their nationals also seem to have embraced greekrank as a PR/recruiting tool and encourage its use, whereas many other nationals understand how sketchy it is and discourage its use. These are a major points that others have noticed. And after establishing a few chapters this way, the young alumnae of them have gone out and helped establish other new chapters emphasizing the same things that they learned in their chapter. These are just some clues as to how APhi nationals may have decided to run their show in the 21st century. No one can say for sure.

To Continue What I Was Just Saying: With all that said, I know many Alpha Phis who are smart and kind and involved and not superficial. I would be happy to have them as sisters in my own house. They are also beautiful girls. After all, being good-looking doesn't discount a woman having other wonderful qualities on the inside as well. I hope we all know that. We are all more than our letters and a stereotype on greekrank.

Are you APhi nationals? Because that's the only way you can 100% guarantee for them. When APhi was colonizing at UGA APhi was all over greekrank and they hadn't even taken a class yet. Then it was all about their new house with info only they would know. It's easy to post a question pretending to want to know something about APhi and then answer yourself about a minute later with all the right answers. Really it's a bit obvious.

Not nationals I'm the notorious Ole Miss colonization poster, checking up every year to see how the new babies are doing. You can never know who's posting what but I feel like any greek would agree no nationals would ever encourage that lol

I don't think Alpha Phi's Nationals knows how to market Alpha Phi in the South. In other areas of the country you can market your girls as "HOT, HOT, HOT" and it works. Unfortunately in the South that marketing strategy kind of makes you think of those 'adult' stores with those flashing lights. Alpha Phi at Ole Miss is successfully recruiting and making their quota. And they have recruited some attractive women, they do have the lowest GPA of all the sororities, but with time they could bring that up. Hopefully they will continue to successfully recruit and be a strong sorority on campus. Ole Miss needs more sororities and hopefully the ones we already have will continue to prosper.

Good point re: marketing strategy in the South. The problem for any chapter that gets a reputation like "hot" (or any negative, like "weird") is that once the reputation is embedded, it's hard to get past it. Perception is everything to a great degree.

Alpha Phi seems to be getting established and I hope they do well. We need every house on campus to succeed, otherwise we won't get any new houses to accommodate the growing number of girls going through rush.

A new chapter in the south is next to impossible to "successfully market," especially at schools with such strong traditions. Doing their own thing instead of trying (and inevidably failing) to compete with top southern chapters has actually done them some favours so far, imo. You can bash them but the girls in APhi seem pretty happy with their sisterhood so if you ask me that's not a bad measure of a successful chapter.

Well neither of the above posters bashed Alpha Phi, just posted an observation that a lot of us have noticed. Alpha Phi is free to recruit how ever they want, no one is stopping them.
